as these are subject to change in January and February.

 

 

 

 

The Community Foundation of the Virginias now offers a variety of separate scholarship opportunities for area students. The Foundation awarded scholarships totaling more than $79,000 to 61 area high school and college students seeking to further their education in 2016.

 

Below is a list of available Scholarships. Many of these funds have special requirements in the online application that applicants need to read before applying for them.

Applicants should carefully read the details of every scholarship they want to apply for to be certain that they meet the requirements of each scholarship.

 

 


 

The Lauren Alexis Perdue Memorial Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for graduating seniors of Bluefield High School, Bluefield, WV who will be full-time students at an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university. Preference is given to applicants who have been a cheerleader, and second preference is for applicants who played football at Bluefield High School.

 

The Grants Supermarket Fund

The Grants Supermarket Fund is set up to provide scholarship assistance to existing employees or a graduating senior child of an existing employee of any Grants Super Market. Preference will be given to low-income individuals who have shown academic excellence.

 

The Larry and Patsy Douglas Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for graduating seniors of Bluefield High School, Bluefield, WV who will be a full-time student at one of the following schools: Bluefield College, Bluefield, VA; Bluefield State College, Bluefield, WV; Concord University, Athens, WV; or West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV.

 

The Cyrus Leroy and Blanche Mae Nicholson Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for students wanting to major in Agriculture or Art in a two-year or four-year institution that are graduating seniors at high schools in Mercer County, West Virginia, McDowell County, West Virginia, Tazewell County, Virginia, and Bland County, Virginia.

 

The Ann and Geno Preservati Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for students wanting to major in Auto and Diesel Mechanics or Accounting in a two-year or four-year institution that are graduating seniors at high schools in Mercer County, West Virginia, McDowell County, West Virginia, Tazewell County, Virginia, and Bland County, Virginia.

 

The Otis "Slim" Kidd Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is for students wanting to study Welding in a two-year or four-year institution that are graduating seniors at high schools in Mercer County, West Virginia, McDowell County, West Virginia, Tazewell County, Virginia, and Bland County, Virginia.

 

The Alex Mahood Fund

Applicants for Alex Mahood Scholarship must be graduating seniors from Bluefield High School or Graham High School who plan to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college on a full-time basis.

 

The James and Rebecca Steorts Scholarship Fund

The Steorts Scholarship Fund is for graduating seniors from high schools in Mercer and McDowell Counties in WV and Tazewell County, VA who plan to attend Concord University, with preference for students majoring in business.

 

The Bluefield High Schools' Alumni Fund

This scholarship benefits graduating seniors of Bluefield High School by assisting deserving students who are academically prepared but financially needy. Applicants must be graduating seniors of Bluefield High School with a demonstrated desire to improve their quality of life through higher education, i.e. College, Jr. College, or technical or career Trade School.

 

The James C. Ramey, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

To provide scholarship assistance to graduating seniors of Princeton Senior High School, Princeton, West Virginia; Bluefield High School, Bluefield, West Virginia; Pikeview High School, Princeton, West Virginia; Graham High School, Bluefield, Virginia; Tazewell High School, Tazewell, Virginia; and Richlands High School, Richlands, Virginia, who intend to enroll in a two-year or four-year institution of higher learning, such as a community college, college or university undergraduate program, nursing school, or trade school.

 

The Margaret "Trika" Smith-Burke Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is restricted to graduating seniors at Richlands High School, Richlands, Virginia, and to college students who graduated from Richlands High School and have received this award in one or more previous years.

 

The Bluefield High School Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is restricted to graduating seniors at Bluefield High School, Bluefield, West Virginia who will pursue one of two major courses of study. Preference is given to students majoring in Business, and if no qualified applicants for Business are found, applicants majoring in Education will be considered.

 

The Rose Sinicrope Scholarship Fund

This scholarship is restricted to members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Princeton, West Virginia and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, West Virginia.

 

The E. R. Gillespie Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for graduates of Bluefield High School, Bluefield, West Virginia; Graham High School, Bluefield, Virginia; Tazewell High School, Tazewell, Virginia and/or Princeton Senior High School, Princeton, West Virginia. Preference given to students with an affiliation with Shell Oil Company.

 

The Graham High School Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for a Graham High School senior, in memory of Don Neal.  

 

The Max L. and Virginia S. Kammer Family Scholarship Fund

One scholarship. See the online application for additional details.     

 

The Maurice and Grace Hanna Weinberg Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for a Graham High School, Princeton Senior High School or Bluefield High School graduating senior.      

 

The Doctor Jack Walter Witten Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for a Tazewell High School senior.        

 

The Ralph H. and Shirley D. Kiser Family Scholarship Fund

The number of scholarships is undetermined Applicants must be residents of Mercer County who are financially needy but academically prepared and plan to attend Bluefield College Ministerial Program.     

The Roy R. Raub, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund

Number of scholarships is undetermined. See online application for additional details. 

 

The East River Mountain #5432 Harley Owners Group Scholarship Fund

Applicants must be graduating seniors of high schools in Mercer and McDowell counties in West Virginia, and Tazewell and Bland counties in Virginia who will be attending college, junior college, trade or vocational school. The scholarship gives primary consideration to graduating seniors who are a son or daughter of an emergency service employee/manager (ESE or ESM) fire fighter, police officer, rescue worker, member of the military, etc., who died in the line of duty or as a result of injuries sustained in the line of duty. If there are no qualified applicants whose parent died in the line of duty or as the result of an injury sustained in the line of duty, the scholarship may be awarded to a graduating senior from any of the high schools in the designated counties, or to a college student who is the son or daughter of an active emergency service worker or manager as defined above. Previous recipients may apply annually while in college.

 

The C. B. and Ora Hunter Hancock Family Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for a graduating Bluefield High School senior who plans to attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis.     

 

The Harmon Masonic Lodge #222 Scholarship Fund

One scholarship for a Graham High School senior, or senior from another Tazewell County High School with Masonic connection                 

 

The William G. Skewes Memorial Scholarship Fund

For graduating seniors in high schools in Mercer, McDowell and Tazewell counties.

 

The Joshua Lee Shutt Memorial Fund

Established to provide a grant and/or scholarship to aid the youth of Mercer County. 

 

The Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Scholarship Fund

For children of employees of Bluefield College, Bluefield, VA; Bluefield State College, Bluefield, WV; Concord University, Athens, WV and other area institutions of higher learning.   

 

The Lindsay Rebekah Haun Memorial Scholarship Fund

For Princeton Senior High School seniors who have actively participated in performing arts organizations while in high school.

 

The Joetta Collins Hooker Memorial Scholarship Fund

To provide scholarship assistance to up to four academically prepared graduating seniors of River View High School, McDowell County, West Virginia, who plan to major in Education.

 

The Ed and Doris Hooker American History Fund

The Hooker American History Fund awards $500 to the graduating Senior at River View High School, McDowell County, West Virginia, who is chosen from among those students scoring 90 percent or higher on the Ed and Doris Hooker American History Test that are recommended for consideration by the school counselors.

 

The Robert Austin Family Scholarship Fund

Provides scholarship assistance for graduates of Bluefield High School or Graham High School who attend Bluefield College.
