Grant and Scholarship Awards for 2013

 

 

Grants

 

 

The Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of 44 grants for 2013. These awards totaling $82,287.06 represent the Foundation’s 17th annual Grant Cycle supporting local nonprofit groups. With the inclusion of the 2013 awards, the Foundation has returned more than $1,000,000 to the area since 1997 in grants and scholarships.

 

In addition to the awards through the regular Grant Cycle, this year the Community Foundation’s Community Impact Project awarded the City of Bluefield, West Virginia more than $22,000 for the renovation of the Bedford Street and Midway playgrounds as part of the West Virginia Development Office’s Neighbor Investment Program.

 

The Grants Committee is chaired by Robert Perkinson and comprised of eight members this year, including Mary Jo Babbitt, Rich Bezjak, Phyllis Beaver-Horwitz, Kathleen Blaydes, Carole Dodson, Craig Hammond, Doris Sue Kantor, and Kermit Moore.

 

The Board of Directors of the Foundation unanimously approved the following grants on September 10, 2013:

 

EDUCATION:

Tazewell County Prenatal Project ?$2,000 Family Life Program (Ruth Creasy and A. Elmo Fleshman Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

Bible in the Schools ?$1,317.34 Donor-Designated for the Mercer County Program (B.G. and Rachel Blalock Family Fund)

Appalachian South Folklife Center ?$2,000 Learning Day Camp 2014    (Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield College New Opportunity for Women Program - $1,275 for Leadership Development Sessions (Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill Fund)

Concord University Research and Development - $2,000 to purchase archival supplies for preservation of artifacts (Unrestricted Fund)

Reading Bee for Mercer and Tazewell County - $2,000 for the Mercer County and Tazewell County Program (Bluefield Daily Telegraph Literacy Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

SATIRA Substance Abuse Taskforce in Rural Appalachia - $2,000 program costs for volunteers (Unrestricted Fund)

Mercer Charitable Clinic - $512.10 Donor-Designated for the program (Charles E. and Jerry Ann Myles Fund)

Preferred Hospice DBA Legacy Hospice, Inc. - $2,000 to provide hospice       care to uninsured or under-insured in Tazewell County (Unrestricted Fund)

 

HUMAN SERVICES:

Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens, Inc. - $2,000 for concrete pads or a generator and walk-in freezer (Unrestricted Fund) 

Blessings in a Backpack - $2,000 meals in backpacks to low-income children (Judge Jerome and Hilda R. Katz Memorial Fund, Fund for Mercer County and Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield City Park Recreational Trails - $2,000 for gravel for the family friendly trail (Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield State College Foundation - $1,600 seating enhancements outside of the Othello Harris Jefferson Student Center (Unrestricted Fund)

Brushfork Elementary School - $2,000 to help fund a community fitness            track (Warren Ashby and Elizabeth Featherstone Thornhill Memorial Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

Child Protect of Mercer County - $2,000 to purchase strollers, car seats and high chairs for low-income families (Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund and Fund for Mercer County)

Childlaw Services, Inc. - $2,000 for renovations to the waiting room and front porch (Fund for Mercer County)

Children’s Home Society of West Virginia - $2,000 for the Monthly Support Program (Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund and Fund for Mercer County)

City of Princeton - $2,000 to purchase large planters for Mercer Street (Unrestricted Fund)

City of Princeton Fire Department - $1,000 to purchase hazmat equipment (Unrestricted Fund) 

Lifeline Elder Care Center Operation Compassion - $2000 to purchase furniture and kitchen supplies for the elderly care center (Unrestricted Fund)

Marine Corps League Toys for Tots - $2,000 support for the program (Fund for Mercer County)

Mercer County Spay Association - $500 for vaccinations, spay and neuter costs (Unrestricted Fund)

Mountain Kids, Inc. - $2,000 for Summer Camp 2014 (Unrestricted Fund)

Nemours Ruritan Club - $2,000 roof replacement on the community building (Unrestricted Fund)

Princeton Police Department - $2,030 Friends for Life Program (Unrestricted Fund)

Richlands Elementary School - $1,955.45 to purchase three sets of choral risers and handrails (Unrestricted Fund)

Ronald McDonald House Charities of SWVA - $2,000 to provide a “home-away-from-home?for families from Mercer and Tazewell counties (Unrestricted Fund)

Royal Family Kids Camp - $2,000 in support of the Mentoring Friends Program and a no-cost camp for low income children in Mercer County (Fund for Mercer County)

Save-A-Pet Food Bank - $2,000 for pet food assistance to low income families (Unrestricted fund)

Second Chance for Cats - $500 for program support (Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund)

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center - $2,000 to fund monthly social events for disabled adults in Mercer County (The Sandra Gayle Monk Memorial Fund)

Sunrise Center - $2,000 for program support (Unrestricted Fund)

Teen Venture Center, Inc. - $2,000 skate filed trip for members of the skate crew (Unrestricted Fund)

The Wade Center - $707.17 Donor-Designated Fund

The Wade Center - $2,000 to purchase food for children’s backpacks to take home for the weekends (AEP Community Services Fund, Ghia M. Borg Memorial Fund, Community Action Grant Fund, Judge Jerome and Hilda R. Katz Memorial Fund, and the Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund)

Troop 93 Boy Scouts of America - $2,000 to purchase fifteen tents (William D. Evans Fund, Perkinson Family Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

Community Concert Assoc/Blue Mountain Performing Arts - $3,500 for program support of “Back on Broadway? (Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund, Charles A. and Marjorie M. Peters Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield College Art and Design Department - $3,090 to bring sculptor Charlie Brouwer to create and build a community ladder sculpture (Jannie Poteet Light Fund for Art Studies and the Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund)

Beautification Commission of Bluefield, VA - $1,800 for a flag pole for the American and state flag at the water fountain (Ammar Family Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield, WV Beautification Commission - $2,000 to relandscape Rotary Park (Ammar Family Memorial Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

City of Bluefield Fine Arts Commission - $2,000 for the restoration of the model trains (Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield Preservation Society - $3,000 to repair and remodel the restrooms inside the Historic Granada Theater (Anonymous Fund, Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund, and Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield, VA Industrial Development Authority - $1,500 to purchase materials to construct 75 quilt stands for the annual quilt show (Unrestricted Fund)

Gary Bowlings House of Art - $2,000 for art classes for special needs children (Unrestricted Fund)                                                                      

 

Scholarships

At its May meeting the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. reviewed and approved scholarships for 56 students seeking to further their education.

 

Most of the students are graduating high school seniors from high schools in Mercer, McDowell and Tazewell counties, although 14 are existing college students who had their financial aid renewed for another year.

 

This year’s awards bring to 329 the total number of scholarships awarded since the Foundation began these awards in 1998. The scholarships are funded by 18 individual endowments among the Foundation’s nearly 60 funds. This year’s awards total $52,545.

 

The recipients were chosen from more than 200 applications reviewed by the Foundation’s Scholarship Committee, chaired by Carole Dodson, with members Mary Azzo, Gene Bailey, Carl Gillespie, Eugenia Hancock, Harry Kammer, Mary Raub, Jim Steorts, Susan Cooper-Snyder, Bettye VanDyke, and Susan Whittaker.
