Grant and Scholarship Awards for 2011

 

Grants

 

The Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. is pleased to announce the award of 33 grants for 2011. The Grants Committee is chaired by Robert Perkinson and comprised of ten members this year, including: Mary Azzo, Rich Bezjak, Phyllis Beaver-Horwitz, Kathleen Blaydes, Carole Dodson, Darryl Hudson, Doris Sue Kantor, Susan Cooper-Snyder, Bettye VanDyke and Pat Whittaker.

These awards totaling $50,094.86 represent the Foundation’s 15th annual grant cycle supporting local nonprofit groups.  A total of $71,098.84 was requested from the Foundation. With the inclusion of the 2011 awards, the Foundation has returned approximately $774,114 to the area since 1997 in grants and scholarships.

The Board of Directors of the Foundation unanimously approved the following grants on September 20, 2011: 

I.          EDUCATION:

 

Appalachian South Folklife Center – $1,500 Learning Day Camp 2012 (Ruth Creasy and A. Elmo Fleshman Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

Bible in the Schools – $1,209.89 Donor-Designated for the Mercer County Program (B.G. and Rachel Blalock Family Fund)

First Book Mercer County - $1,000 to provide new books to low-income children in Mercer County (Judge Jerome and Hilda R. Katz Memorial Fund and the Community Action Grant Fund)

First Book Tazewell County - $1,000 to provide new books to low-income in Tazewell County (Community Action Grant Fund and the Bluefield Daily Telegraph Literacy Fund)

 

            II         HEALTH:

 

                        Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens - $2,000 dishwasher for the Healthy Meals Program (Unrestricted Fund)         

Mercer Health Right, Inc. - $533.79 Donor-Designated for the program (Charles E. and Jerry Ann Myles Fund)

 

II.        HUMAN SERVICES:

 

            Buckskin Council Boy Scouts of American - $2,000 to support registration and Boy’s Life Magazine subscription fees (Perkinson Family Fund and Unrestricted Fund)

            Child Protect of Mercer County - $1,500 to purchase car seats (Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund and Fund for Mercer County)

Children’s Home Society of West Virginia - $1,800 for the WE CAN Program (Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund and Fund for Mercer County)

City of Bluefield Fire Department - $2,000 to purchase two computers (Unrestricted Fund)

Dollar Energy Fund - $2,000 for utility assistance program for low-income in Mercer County (Fund for Mercer County)

East River Soccer Association - $2,000 to purchase new trash cans and recycling containers for the soccer complex (Unrestricted Fund)

Four Seasons Young Men’s Christian Association - $2,000 support of the “Good Works” program for Mercer and Tazewell County residents, with emphasis on handicapped in Mercer County (Sandra Gayle Monk Memorial Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

Golden Girl Group Home - $1,500 repairs to the group home that houses Mercer County youth (Fund for Mercer County and Unrestricted Fund)

Mercer County Civil Air Patrol - $1,000 for exterior signs for the Civil Air Patrol facility (Warren Ashby and Elizabeth Featherstone Thornhill Fund)

Mercer County Spay Association - $500 for vaccinations, spay and neuter costs (Warren Ashby and Elizabeth Featherstone Thornhill Fund and the Rotary Club of Bluefield)

Princeton Board of Parks and Rec - $2,000 for dri-deck flooring for the pool bathe house (Unrestricted Fund)

Princeton Fire Dept. - $2,000 to purchase thermal imaging camera (Unrestricted Fund)

REACHH Family Resource Center - $1,500 in support of the family nights program (Unrestricted Fund)

Royal Family Kids Camp - $2,000 in support of the Mentoring Friends Program for Mercer County (Fund for Mercer County)

Sunrise Center - $2,000 for program support (Unrestricted Fund)

Tazewell Baseball Boosters - $1,000 for improvements to the baseball facility (Unrestricted Fund)

The Wade Center - $701.18 Donor-Designated Fund (Sylvester C. and Janice Myers Fund)

WISE (WV Community Services for Women, Inc.) - $250 for costs associated with printing brochures (Ruth Creasy and A. Elmo Fleshman Fund and the Rotary Club of Bluefield)

 

IV.      ARTS, CULTURE & THE HUMANITIES:

 

Community Concert Assoc/Blue Mountain Performing Arts - $2,000 for the Golden Dragon Acrobats performance (Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund, the Anonymous Fund and the Charles A. and Marjorie M. Peters Fund)

Beautification Commission of Bluefield, VA - $1,500 for welcome signs (Unrestricted Fund)

Bluefield, WV Beautification Commission - $2,000 for banners for South Bluefield (Ammar Family Memorial Fund)

Chuck Mathena Center - $1,000 for the Share the Dream Program (Unrestricted Fund)

City of Bluefield Fine Arts Commission - $2,000 for walking tour brochure costs (The Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

Children’s Home Society of West Virginia - $2,000 for costs for low-income children to attend performing arts events (The Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund, Fund for Mercer County, and The Charles A. and Marjorie M. Peters Fund)

Gary Bowlings House of Art - $500 for art supplies for the Kids Art Program (The Fannie Kate and Betty Gardner Bailey Fund and the Jeffrey Edward Shott Memorial Fund)

Mercer County Fair - $1,500 in support of “History Hitting the Road” program (Unrestricted Fund)

South Bluefield Merchants & Professional Association - $2,000 for the Lemonade Days Program (The Charles A. and Marjorie M. Peters Fund and the Unrestricted Fund)

Theatre Arts of West Virginia - $1,600 to present school performances (Unrestricted Fund)

 
Scholarships  

The Community Foundation of the Virginias, Inc. is pleased to announce the awarding of 56 scholarships for 2011 totaling $52,675 from 17 individual scholarship funds. Scholarship recipients were chosen through a competitive process, and those recipients who are high school seniors will be presented their award at their school's Awards Ceremony. Other recipients will be notified by mail.
